Shared numbers: how they work

Updated Tue Aug 04 2026 00:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)Web & iOS

In Ody, a phone number belongs to the workspace, not to any one person — every teammate can see its conversations, answer its calls, and text from it, and the AI receptionist can cover it when nobody's available.

What "shared" means in practice

  • One inbox for everything. Every SMS, MMS, call, and voicemail to a workspace number lands in the shared Inbox as one timeline per contact. Anyone on the team can read and reply; voicemails arrive transcribed.
  • Calls ring the team. With the Ring the team setting, an inbound call rings every teammate who has the app open — desktop and iPhone together. First to pick up takes the call.
  • One outward identity. Whoever replies, customers see your business number — not personal cell numbers.
  • Scheduled handling. The work schedule decides per call whether to ring the team, hand it to the AI receptionist, or take a voicemail — automatically, based on your hours.

Numbers on your plan

  • Every plan includes one phone number and calling & texting across the US & Canada.
  • Owners and admins can add more numbers from Settings → Numbers (additional numbers are a monthly add-on billed with your subscription), and can port existing numbers in via Settings → Numbers → Port a number.
  • Each number has its own voicemail greeting and answering mode, so a second line can behave differently (for example, a support line that goes straight to the AI).

Frequently asked questions

If two people open the same conversation, do replies collide?

Everyone sees the same live thread, so you can see what's already been handled before replying. Messages you send show as coming from the workspace number.

Do calls ring everyone at once?

With "Ring the team", inbound calls ring every signed-in teammate (web and iPhone together) — first to answer takes the call, and unanswered calls go to voicemail with a transcript.

Can I add more numbers?

Yes — every plan includes one number, and owners/admins can add more from Settings → Numbers as a paid add-on.
