Add another AI agent
You can run several AI receptionists in one workspace — for example a Spanish line, a sales desk, or a different after-hours agent on a second number. Each agent has its own name, greeting, voice, schedule and lines; they share your knowledge base and your AI credits.
Before you start
- You need admin or owner access.
- Your plan sets the limit: Starter 1 agent, Growth 3, Enterprise 10 (free trials: 3).
- To put two agents behind one number you need phone menus (Growth and Enterprise). With a spare number, any plan that allows a second agent works.
Step-by-step
Click the AI agent icon in the left sidebar.
Under Your AI agents you see one cube per agent — its status (Draft, Live or Off), its name and the number it answers. Click the Add another AI agent cube.
In the Add an AI agent sheet, type a name (for example Sales or Soporte en español) — callers hear it in phone menus ("Press 2 for Sales") — and pick a Voice.
Under Where should callers reach it?, choose one:
- Answer +1 (…) — the new agent takes over that line. The sheet tells you what the line does today ("rings the team", "goes to voicemail", "is answered by Astra") so nothing changes by surprise.
- Add to +1 (…) as a menu key — for a workspace with one line. Callers hear "Press 1 for Astra, press 2 for Sales": key 1 keeps exactly what the line did before (your current agent, voicemail, forwarding or the team), the new agent gets the next free key. If the line already has a phone menu, the new agent is added as one more key and the greeting ends with "Press 3 for Sales."
- Not now — create the agent only and connect a line later from its Schedule tab or Settings → Numbers. A line that runs a call flow is listed but not selectable — add an Astra step for the new agent in the flow builder instead.
Click Create agent. A toast confirms what happened — for example "Sales created — callers to +1 (512) 555-1234 press 2 to reach it. Publish it to go live." The new cube is selected.
Set the greeting, tone and jobs on the Agent tab, click Save draft, then Publish. Until it is published, the new agent is a draft and its line (or menu key) rings your team instead.
Working with several agents
- Switch agents by clicking a cube. The four tabs — Call flow, Agent, Schedule, Test call — always show the selected agent. If you have unsaved edits, Ody asks before switching.
- Each agent's lines are on its Schedule tab. A line another agent answers is marked "Answered by Astra — Use schedule moves it to this agent".
- Knowledge is shared: the Agent tab's knowledge card lists what this agent can read. Limit an article to one agent from the Knowledge tab — see Choose which AI uses an article.
- Test call lists every way to reach the selected agent: its numbers, "Press 2 on +1 (…)" for menu keys, and call-flow lines.
- Delete an agent from the bottom of its Agent tab (Delete this agent). Lines it answered go back to ringing the team and its menu keys are removed. A workspace always keeps at least one agent — turn it Off instead.
- The first agent you created is the one the iOS and Android apps show and edit. Other agents are managed on the web.
Troubleshooting
- The Add another AI agent cube is locked — you have reached your plan's limit ("1 of 1 on your plan"). Upgrade under Settings → Usage billing, or delete an agent you no longer use.
- "Phone menus are part of the Growth plan" — the menu option needs Growth or Enterprise. Give the new agent its own number instead (Settings → Numbers → Add a number, $5/month).
- Callers don't reach the new agent — check its cube says Live (not Draft or Off) and that its subtitle names a number or a menu key, not "No line yet".

Frequently asked questions
How many AI agents can I have?
Starter includes one, Growth three, Enterprise ten. Free trials get three so you can try it. The Add another AI agent cube shows your count and locks when you reach the limit.
Do extra agents cost more?
No. Agents are included in your plan; AI calls use the same AI credits whichever agent answers.
I only have one number — can two agents share it?
Yes, with a phone menu (Growth and Enterprise plans): callers press 1 for your current receptionist and 2 for the new agent. Everything the line did before stays on key 1.
Do the agents share my knowledge base?
Yes. Every agent reads the articles in the Knowledge tab that are available to all AI; you can limit an article to specific agents — see Choose which AI uses an article.
